When building a campfire, choose an area that will offer some shelter from any unexpected wind shifts.
Clear the ground where the fire will be built, avoiding spots with overhanging branches. The ideal spot will be at least 10 to 12 feet (3 to 4 metres) away from your tents. Dig or clear a shallow fire pit and ring it with rocks. Rocks the size of footballs make the best fire pit walls.
Gather wood and stack in separate piles away from the fire area. Do not use green or freshly cut wood.
You'll need three different kinds of wood for a successful campfire:
Small twigs, wood shavings, leaves, grass, dry needles, or bark
Small sticks 1/2 inch (1 cm) thick or less
