Cycling accessory basics

With a little planning, you can ensure that each trip out is a safe and invigorating adventure. Follow these simple points to keep both your bike and yourself in top form each and every time out.

  • Save your head:

It's easier than ever to protect your head because modern helmets are light, well-ventilated and attractive. Look for an ANSI or "Snell Memorial Foundation Inc." sticker, which indicates that the helmet meets accepted impact standards. Try on several brands until you find one that fits snugly but isn't tight. Most helmets come with a variety of interchangeable foam pads that can be mixed and matched to ensure good fit. There should be no more than a one-finger gap at the sides. The helmet should sit squarely on the head and not slide back and forth or side to side. You also do not want the helmet to sit so high as to expose the forehead to the possibility of being hit if the rider falls.
