Cycling accessory basics

  • Protect your eyes:

Sunglasses offer protection from wind, bugs, grit, glare and ultraviolet light. Look for sports eyewear that wraps around the field of vision, permitting a good peripheral view. The lens should be made of a high-impact, shatterproof material. A neutral grey or green tint is best for bright daylight, while clear or amber lenses are recommended for bad weather.

  • Always carry water:

Water is essential on long rides, especially on hot days. It's best to carry two bottles and cages. Remember to drink BEFORE you're thirsty. One rule of thumb is to take a big swig from your water bottle every 15 minutes. When riding, you should consume about 20 ounces or one standard bottle per hour – more if it's hot or humid. On hot days, freeze a bottle of water; the ice will melt slowly, supplying you with cool, refreshing liquid.
