Tomatoes for your table

Staked tomatoes are less prolific and more prone to cracking, sunscald and blossom-end rot because the fruit is exposed to the sun.

Cages can be purchased at garden centres. Be sure to buy sturdy ones at least 6 feet (180 cm) high. Once the cage is in place, the plant can be left to grow at will. Caged tomato plants develop more foliage, which is a double-edged sword: the fruit is protected from sunscald, but late in the season you may need to prune some of the foliage so that warm air can get in and ripen the tomatoes. Cages can also be difficult to store.
