No more 3-putts and no more chunky chips!

For the average golfer, half of your total score is made on the greens. A further 30% will be your chipping. So, doesn't it make sense to spend 80% of your practice time with the putter and low irons? Most golfers, however, spend more time practising with the driver, a club used a maximum of 14 times in each round, than a putter, a club used at least twice that many times.

Here are some putting and chipping practice tips that might just help you save some strokes and maybe even get rid of those hated 3-putts!

Putting

If you practise for an hour, make sure you put in at least 30 minutes on the practice green.

  • Practise putting before going to the driving range, because you want to be mentally fresh and alert to read the fine details of the green – like slope and grain.
  • Start with short putts and gradually increase the distance, moving away in 5-foot increments.
