Regardless of the season, your hike will be more enjoyable if you give some serious thought to what you’re wearing.
By dressing in layers, you can adapt to any conditions throughout the day. A synthetic layer next to your skin, such as a polypropylene T-shirt or undershirt, will wick moisture (perspiration) away from your body and keep you cool and comfortable. Next, a fleece vest or jacket can be added, and lastly, a windproof shell.
Remember, hiking will make you sweat, no matter the weather. Shedding or adding thin layers enables you to regulate your body temperature much more effectively than having to choose between keeping a heavy jacket on or taking it off.
Protect yourself against encounters with poison ivy, poison oak or poison sumac by wearing long socks, keeping your feet covered (no sandals!) and wearing long pants.
