Tips for safe hiking

If you take a little time to plan your hiking trip and prepare properly, you will be more likely to have a safe and enjoyable excursion.

Planning

Before you leave, study the trail guide and road maps. By accurately calculating the time required to get to the trail head, you can ensure an early start, reducing the chance of spending too many hours in the peak heat of the day and getting too tired.

Study the trail guide to select the portion of the trail you wish to hike. Take into account the amount of time you want to spend hiking and particular features you want to explore. If you are inexperienced, build your endurance gradually by starting out with a hike of four to six kilometres, progressing to longer hikes as you gain confidence in your abilities. Don't try to hike for eight hours on your first trip out!

On the trail

Pack enough to drink to keep yourself properly hydrated. You cannot depend on accessing pure water these days. Also pack high-energy snacks. They will ensure that you have the necessary calories to keep you going.
